Mark Wahlberg Wants a Fighter Trilogy

The Fighter was one of those rare combinations of the right cast and the right story, as evidenced by its recent sweep of the supporting actor awards at the Oscars, so to Mark Wahlberg, at least, it seems like a given that they should just do it all over again. Speaking to Extra on Sunday, Wahlberg said, “We’re gonna talk about doing No. 2,” adding, “We’re gonna do the Ward /Gatti trilogy and make it real.” The “trilogy” Wahlberg is referring to is the series of fights between Mickey Ward and the late Arturo Gatti, Ward’s most famous and most evenly matched rival, brutal grudge matches that sent both opponents to the trauma ward several times yet also made them millions of dollars.

 

The cinematic ups and downs of the fights, the side story about Ward and Gatti becoming friends in the end, the way it offered a dramatic capper to Ward’s career—obviously these would lend themselves to another film. But of course, this is just talk at this point, and it goes without saying that it would be crucial to get the same cast on board. Which means Christian Bale would have to once again hit the crash diet and transform himself into a plucked rooster. Clearly this whole sequel idea is just Mark Wahlberg’s way of trying to kill Christian Bale. [via The Playlist]

MGM Wants Elite Squad Director for Robocop Remake

Jose Padilha, the Brazilian director behind the gritty South American Elite Squad movies, is in talks to direct Robocop, the film project which is the reconstituted MGM’s top priority.

The studio was meeting with directors last week -- others on the list included Robert Rodriguez and David Slade – with Padilha emerging a top cop.

Robocop is remake of the 1987 sci-fi action film which introduced Paul Verhoeven to Hollywood and featured a cop who is brought back from the brink of death in the form of a cyborg with no memories of his prior life.

The project was in development at MGM when the company’s production division was overseen by Mary Parent and even had Darren Aronofsky attached to direct.

The new MGM is looking to make three pictures to start, two in the $30 million range and one in the $80 million range. Robocop has the latter slot.

MGM is also zeroing on writers to pen a new script.

The film could act as the Hollywood debut for Padilha, whom the town has been high on since 2007’s Elite Squad. The helmer was attached to direct The Sigma Protocol, an adaptation of a Robert Ludlum novel, but has since moved on. His Elite Squad 2 recently became the highest-grossing film in Brazil’s box office history, surpassing even Hollywood fare.

Ewan McGregor wants to kill Giants

Posted by Anthonyon 25. 02. 2011in News Chat Ewan McGregor has done everything from swinging light sabers to swapping spit with Jim Carrey, and if that wasn’t impressive enough it seems that he will finally be able to scratch “slay a giant” off his bucket list in Bryan Singer’s Jack the Giant Killer.

Nicholas Hoult (‘Skins’) will play Jack and Stanley Tucci will play the villain, an advisor to the king with designs on usurping power. Bill Nighy and John Kassir will play the two-headed leader of the giants. McGregor will play the leader of the king’s giant-fighting elite guards. Still to be cast: the princess.

I have to admit that this just sounds fun. I wan’t a fan of Bryan Singer’s last 2 films but this seems like something that he can sink his teeth into and have fun with at the same time. The cast sounds great now It’s time for Mr. Singer to remind us why he became a favorite, and hopefully sway my opinion of him back into my favor. Now who will play the princess?

Sarah Jessica Parker Wants ‘Sex 3′ – Does Anyone else?

Posted by Darrenon 17. 02. 2011in News Chat Just when you thought it was safe to go back into The City, actress Sarah Jessica Parker wants to reprise Carrie Bradshaw one more time.Monsters & Critics reports:

Actress Sarah Jessica Parker has said she is definitely up for a third ‘Sex and the City’ film.

She told the LA Times : ‘I would go back. I think there’s one more story to tell. I know there is.”

While the good news (if you want to see it that way) is that she doesn’t feel a new ‘Sex and the City’ film would be done off at least five years down the road, she feels Michael Patrick King, who wrote the series, could write a good script.

I concur-! I have no doubt that a good or even great script could be written, be it next year or in five years. That said….

I would rather be waterboarded. Because, it may might very well look good on paper. But where was the rabid fanbase for last summer’s sequel? Wait—there *was* a sequel, right? Oh yes…if you blinked, you missed it. The first film was annoying by itself, but at least the folks behind it wrapped up loose ends and had Big marry Carrie. While it could be that a whole new set of gal pals would take the mantle (Jennifer Hudson among them), it was not meant to be.

Sex and The City is wearing out its’ welcome. It is time to move on. The characters of Sex are self-centered and spoiled. Some other actions in the series, such as talking about things we have already seen, may have worked in the show. It gets grating in film. It is a different medium, and they failed to adapt to that medium. That’s what happened with the sequel. Nobody cared, and those that did were bored out of their brains. The sequel bombed badly. I doubt another Sex and the City film will be made unless it is either DTV or waiting not five years, but ten to fifteen when some joker reboots it.

Hayao Miyazaki Wants Kids To Make Fires and Use Knives

In a very peculiar interview, the Japanese equivalent of Walt Disney, Studio Ghibli legend Hayao Miyazaki, has said children should learn to make fires and use a needle and thread before they can read and write. Obviously a technophobe, he gives his opinion on the technology and other distractions in modern day life.

“The environment that surrounds our children, including our animation, is all virtual,” says Miyazaki, known for films like My Neighbor Totoro. “TV, video games, and then email, cell phones, manga. In short, I think the work that we are doing is snatching away children’s power.” This power he is referring to seems to be children’s natural sense of wonder and creativity.

Miyazaki points out the inconsistencies of this, as he makes animated films. “As we are making movies, we always ask ourselves what we are going to do about it.

“There are things date back from the Stone Age that kids must learn before kids start learning to read and write,” he continues. Like? According to Miyazaki, those are how to make a fire, how to keep it burning and put it out, how to climb a tree, how to tie a rope, how to use a needle and thread and how to use a knife. “Before children learn to read and write,” Miyazaki adds, “I think the country has a duty to teach children these things.”
Once Miyazaki was asked if he uses the internet, and he replied that he does not. “I don’t have a computer or fax,” he said. “I don’t have a DVD player either and I forgot how to use a video recorder. I even seldom watch television.” He added that he once played a Japanese chess game with a computer and lost, noting that the computer was “not fair”.

Last summer, Miyazaki called the iPad a “game machine-type thing” that people are “stroking with strange gestures”. Continuing, he said the iPad was “disgusting” and added, “On trains, the number of those people doing that strange masturbation-like gesture is multiplying.”

I adore Ghibli films. This week alone I watched Porco Rosso like 4 times. They’re just beautiful and mostly perfect. Its interesting getting this mans opinion, considering he’s the driving force behind most of them. I agree to an extent that we have waaaaaay too many distractions these days, I mean, I’d be a better animator if it wasn’t for the distractions of the internet. However, if I didn’t have the internet, I could never be inspired by work on artists blogs or deviantart etc… its an interesting topic.
I know when I have kids, I’m gunna make the feckers be active, unlike me.
