It was the battle of the beautiful, the ugly, and the … somewhat odd looking for the top spots this weekend, and leave it Gore Verbinski to bring the tale of a chameleon in way over his bug-eyed head to land solidly in the top spot. Rango bested all in its debut with $38 million to land in 1st. In a distant 2nd (but a not too shabby overall performance), The Adjustment Bureau earned $20.9 million. It appears the sci-fi adventure with Matt Damon and Emily Blunt was a much more interesting romance than the other big offering in the genre this weekend, Beastly, which debuted in 3rd with $10.1 million. While Rango and Bureau have fared well (or in Rango's case, exceedingly well) with critics, Beastly hasn't been viewed quite so prettily.

Hall Pass slips out of the top 3 in its second week, landing in 4th with $9 million. In fact, the next two also held the top spots, in order, last week, Gnomeo & Juliet making 5th with $6.9 million and Unknown in 6th with $6.6 million. Gnomeo's four weeks at the box office have garnered it a total of $85 million, but with the budget numbers being withheld, whether it's made a profit or not is anybody's guess.

The King's Speech didn't make as much as last week, but it climbed a spot to 7th. This year's Best Picture still manages to draw a crowd, making a little over $6.5 million this weekend and $123.8 million in its fifteen week run, proving that a Best Picture can be popular with the audience and with critics. It managed to just top out against Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston in Just Go with It, making $6.5 million, 8th, and a grand total of $88 million so far. I Am Number Four, however, is sliding off the list with a relatively slow domestic gain, earning 9th and $5.7 million this weekend, while Justin Bieber: Never Say Never may be losing ground with 10th, but not going out with a whimper … even with only $4.3 million this weekend, the $13 million budget movie has taken in $68.8 million in four weeks.
