Those two masterpieces hinted at wonderful things to come. Well, Jeunet went on to make Amelie and A Very Long Engagement, but Caro essentially disappeared with only one TV credit between Children and this year. Somewhat surprisingly, at least to this viewer, Caro’s Dante 01 hit DVD on April 21st, 2009. This dark sci-fi vision has drawn comparisons, largely because of its auteur’s previous collaborator, to Alien: Resurrection without the alien. Lambert Wilson (The Matrix Reloaded) plays a new prisoner on a security ship floating through space. It turns out that the man is not your average prisoner and a psychological sci-fi horror film unfolds. Caro recently granted a rare interview to Movie Retriever via email about his new film, his inspiration, and if he would work with Jeunet again.

MOVIE RETRIEVER: What was the origin of Dante 01?

MARC CARO: The main purpose was to find an idea for an inexpensive movie... so few people in one set... With this constraint find a subject permitting visual ambiance and a symbolic story I like...

DANTE 01

MOVIE RETRIEVER: What was the biggest technical challenge of the production of Dante 01?

CARO: Find inexpensive razor blades to shave actors and actresses.

MOVIE RETRIEVER: Were there any films or stories that inspired Dante 01 either thematically or  visually?

CARO: Every movie I have seen before (and there is a lot) are a part of inspiration but specially Solaris by Tarkovski and THX1138 by Lucas.

MOVIE RETRIEVER: You clearly love working with Dominique Pinon. What makes him special as an actor?

CARO: Is the only telepathic actor I know...

DANTE 01

MOVIE RETRIEVER: Can you tell us how you found the rest of your cast? Why Lambert Wilson?

CARO: All the actors mainly come from the theater. I highly appreciate Lambert Wilson for his charisma and elegance. He's a member of the bunch now...

MOVIE RETRIEVER: Creating a believable claustrophobia is essential to a film like this one.  How did you manage to make the actors feel trapped?

CARO: Infernal cadence of shooting and very bad food make the actors feel trapped.

MOVIE RETRIEVER: Is storyboard-ing a major part of your process?

CARO: The storyboard is my sketch of the movie and an important part of the process to focus all the energy needed to the good achievement of the film like a compass...

MOVIE RETRIEVER: How has filmmaking changed since you made Delicatessen?

CARO: People only speak about success now and not about quality...

DANTE 01

MOVIE RETRIEVER: Do you ever go back and watch your old films and think about what you might do differently now?

CARO: I never watch my old films... I pursue the exploration of my poor weird imagination to try to find ideas to make new prototype of film.

MOVIE RETRIEVER: Why was there so much time off between your films?

CARO: In France is not so easy to make a typical movie.

MOVIE RETRIEVER: People who still associate you with Delicatessen and City are going to want to know - do you still talk to Jean-Pierre Jeunet?

CARO: We are always very good and close friend.

DANTE 01

MOVIE RETRIEVER: Do you regret not working with him still?

CARO:  I am not a nostalgic person and I am always looking straight forward...

MOVIE RETRIEVER: Would you consider working together again?

CARO: We never know...

MOVIE RETRIEVER: Who are the current filmmakers that you watch and admire?

CARO: David Lynch, Matthew Barney, Hideo Nakata, Satochi Kon

MOVIE RETRIEVER: Do you have any advice for young filmmakers?

CARO:  Work... Work... Work!!!

- Dante 01 is available on DVD now.
